Let’s Get Started
Hardscape paver walkway and retaining wall in Yuma yard

Hardscaping service result

Hardscaping refers to the non-living elements of a landscape: the patios, walkways, walls, fire pits, and structural features that define outdoor spaces and make them functional. Done well, hardscaping transforms a yard from open ground into a place you actually want to spend time. One-Stop Construction designs and builds hardscape features for residential and commercial properties throughout Yuma, AZ.

What Hardscaping Includes

Hardscape is any constructed feature in the landscape that doesn't grow. It provides structure, defines areas, manages water flow, and creates surfaces for outdoor living. In the desert Southwest, where plants require careful water management and maintenance, hardscape often makes up a larger portion of a well-designed yard than it would in a more temperate climate.

Retaining Walls

Retaining walls hold back soil on sloped lots, create level terraced areas, and manage drainage. In Yuma's sandy, loose soil, a properly built retaining wall is a functional necessity on any property with significant grade change. We build retaining walls in concrete block, natural stone, and dry-stack stone depending on the application and aesthetic you're looking for. Proper drainage behind the wall is as important as the wall itself, and we plan for that from the start.

Walkways and Pathways

A defined walkway connects outdoor spaces, protects your plants and lawn from foot traffic cutting across the yard, and gives the landscape a finished, intentional quality. We install walkways in concrete, pavers, flagstone, and natural stone. The material and width depend on the application. A garden path feels different from a wide entry walkway, and we design accordingly.

Fire Pits and Fire Features

A fire pit anchors an outdoor seating area and makes the backyard feel like a destination. OSC builds custom fire pits in natural stone, concrete block, and brick. We can design them as standalone features or as integrated elements within a larger outdoor living space. Gas and wood-burning options are both available.

Outdoor Kitchens

An outdoor kitchen is a significant hardscape investment with a high return in terms of how much you actually use your backyard. We build outdoor kitchens in concrete masonry unit (CMU) construction with stucco finish: built-in grills, side burners, countertop surfaces, storage, and refrigeration. CMU construction holds up in Yuma's heat without the maintenance issues of wood-frame or metal alternatives.

Seating Walls

Low built-in seating walls around a patio or fire pit define the space and provide permanent seating without furniture clutter. They're typically 18 to 24 inches tall, comfortable to sit on, and can be capped with a smooth stone or concrete surface. They also serve a secondary purpose as a low retaining feature where grade changes meet patio edges.

Decorative Borders and Edging

Brick, concrete block, and stone borders around garden beds, tree rings, and lawn edges give a landscape a clean, maintained appearance and help keep mulch and gravel where they belong. These smaller hardscape details make a real difference in how a yard reads visually.

Materials We Work With

The right material depends on the application, the aesthetic of the property, and the budget. OSC works with all common hardscape materials.

  • Concrete pavers —versatile, wide range of colors and patterns, replaceable if damaged
  • Natural stone —flagstone, river rock, sandstone — high-end appearance, each piece unique
  • Brick —classic look, excellent durability, traditional appeal
  • Concrete block (CMU) —strong structural base for walls, outdoor kitchens, raised beds
  • Poured concrete —solid, cost-effective, available in decorative finishes

Drainage in the Desert

Hardscaping affects how water moves across your property, and in Yuma that matters. Most of the year the soil is dry and impacted, which means when monsoon rains arrive in July and September, water runs off quickly rather than absorbing. Poorly planned hardscape can direct that runoff toward the house foundation, pool equipment, or neighboring properties.

OSC plans drainage from the beginning of every hardscape project. Grade, surface type, and proximity to structures all factor into how we design and install hardscape features. A well-planned hardscape manages water as well as it looks.

Working with OSC

We start every hardscape job with a site visit and a conversation about what you want to build and how you want to use the space. From that, we develop a design and estimate before any work begins. Our crew handles the full scope: layout, excavation, installation, and finishing. We stay in communication throughout the project.

One-Stop Construction is a Yuma-based contractor. We know the local climate, the local soil, and what works here. We're not guessing based on a regional template. We build for this specific environment.
